The Origins of This Site

Let's face it, back in 1997 when I got into music professionally, the music business was a different beast altogether! Fast forward 11 years later and we are facing an absolutely different "game". In fact, nothing is the same anymore!

When I first entered the mainstream music industry in 1997, the idea was to get a demo together and get a major label record deal. I quickly learned with the invention of the Mp3 and the rapid, stunning changes that rocked our industry, that I would have to have more than demos and beg for a deal! Thus began my quest to find out how to make the music business work for me and how to build my own career instead of beg for one.

It's been an ongoing process of acquiring new knowledge throughout my time so far in 'the business'. What is Music Business 101 was started in 2001 and was known as "Resources for Artists".  The site started as a page I created on my official site natalie-brown.com. It was made for a few of my friends at the now defunct Tonos.com (the songwriter site developed by Carole Bayer Sager, Babyface and David Foster). I was relatively new to the new music business world, but had done a lot of research and learning by trial and error. My goal was to pass along resources and books that I found helpful to my fellow music friends. As time has moved on, the 'page' has gotten bigger and longer, so I decided it was time to move all these resources to their own home at Music Business 101.

Today, Music Business 101 serves as an information and resource highway for vocalists, song writers, producers, musicians, engineers and all others from the paths of music, who seek to combine their talent with knowledge.

Anyone who knows me, knows that I preach knowledge as the key to success in this very undefined and uncharted new music business territory. My motto is "Each one, teach one", and it is my hope that this site will serve as a place where resources are shared and knowledge is gathered.

Enjoy your visit and if you have any ideas for added resources or improvements, feel free to send me an email.

Welcome: We're Still Developing

Welcome to Music Business 101. I'm working daily to add resources, articles and more useful information for you. Being a full time vocalist and writer, I'm putting together this resource in between writing songs, recording, licensing, rehearsing and performing etc., etc., so as I discover nuggets of info I'll pass them along to you. Even if you only find one link, tool or useful article, I'll feel like my mining efforts have been successful.

Thanks for visiting and make sure to bookmark this site or add our RSS feed so you are up to date!

I'd LOVE it if you would help promote this site. Click here for banners you can use on your web site, MySpace page, blog or any other web site!

How to Copyright Songs and Sound Recordings
How to Copyright Songs and Sound Recordings

by Joy R. Butler, Esq.

The Musician's Guide Through the Legal Jungle:Answers to Frequently Asked Questions About Music Law

Registration is not Required For a Valid Copyright
First, understand that you don't need to register your copyright with the United States Copyright Office in order to have a valid copyright. You have a valid copyright as soon as your song or sound recording is "fixed in a tangible medium of expression". This is a term used by the Copyright Act and means that your song or sound recording must be written down or recorded. For a discussion of the rights held by the copyright owner of a song or sound recording, see the article, What Exactly is a Music Copyright?

Although registration with the Copyright Office is not required to have a valid copyright, registration does provide several benefits:

  • the establishment of a public record and evidence of your claim as the valid copyright owner of your songs and sound recordings
  • the ability to file a federal lawsuit against someone who uses your song or sound recording without your permission
  • eligibility to receive statutory damages and attorneys' fees in the event you file and win a copyright infringement lawsuit

Every Song Tells A Story... But Does It Need To Be An Abstract Novel?
By Sheena Metal

For a musician, your songs are your art.  They are the physical embodiment of your creative gifts.  Every bit of anger, happiness, angst, joy, pain, elation, knowledge or humor goes into the story known as your song.  You write and re-write it, scouring over each note and word...perfecting it for recording and live performance.

But when you play it for others, you're not getting the reaction you expected. Your friends, fans and family seem less than enthusiastic as they dully respond, "Yeah.  That was...um...good." How could this be?  You poured your soul into this piece.  This was your "Stairway To Heaven"!  This was your "Smells Like Team Spirit"!  It's a lyrically amazing ode about the persecution of pagan midwives in grass hut tribes!  It flows, it breathes, and it's seven and a half minutes of pure musical perfection!
